“roots” by ABIGAIL hotalen
In my “Roots” exhibit, I have taken characteristics and details from certain cafes, shops, boutiques that I have grown up going to, that had a certain sense of home. With these feelings and characteristics in mind I have created a fictional bakery called, The Chocolate Chip. Some characteristics that I find to be successful for this certain sensation are familiar and soothing color schemes and the presence of handmade or locally produced items.
For my show I have designed a logo, menu, rack card, sticker design. The logo I have designed will be shown on napkins and a sign that will be on display in the bakery. All of these items follow the same scheme of inviting colors, patterns, and type faces. To incorporate the “handmade” or “locally made” aspect I have also designed 2 different chalkboard signs that will be used as decoration.
I essentially wanted to create an atmosphere that had a warm, inviting, and comfy-home like feeling where people enjoy coming to eat or visit. I feel like once we get older, especially college age, some of us learn to really appreciate being home and being around “our people”, and I hope this bakery has that effect on its audience.
